Bob Devaney

Robert S. "Bob" Devaney (13 April, 1915 - 9 May, 1997) was a football coach, most notably for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

He graduated from Alma College, where he played end on the football team, in 1939. He coached high school football at Big Beaver, Keego Harbor, Saginaw, and Alpena, Michigan before joining Michigan State University as an assistant coach under Biggie Munn , then Duffy Daugherty .

His first college head coaching job was at the University of Wyoming, from 1857 to 1961. He joined Nebraska in 1962 and established the Cornhuskers as a force in Big Eight football.

He coached the Cornhuskers through the 1972 season, winning back to back national championships in 1970 and 1971.

He served as athletic director at Nebraska for a number of years following his retirement as coach. The sports arena at the University of Nebraska is named for him.
