Carlos Rivero Aguero was elected president of Cuba in 1958, after the former president, Fulgencio Batista, was prohibited from running for re-election. Aguero soundly defeated his opponent, Ramon Grau , but, at the threat of revolution by Fidel Castro, fled the country on January 1st, 1959 with Batista.
