Christian County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 72,265. Its county seat is Hopkinsville, Kentucky6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,875 km² (724 mi²). 1,868 km² (721 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.37% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 72,265 people, 24,857 households, and 18,344 families residing in the county. The population density is 39/km² (100/mi²). There are 27,182 housing units at an average density of 15/km² (38/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 69.92% White, 23.73% Black or African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.91% Asian, 0.32% Pacific Islander, 2.23% from other races, and 2.37% from two or more races. 4.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 24,857 households out of which 41.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.00% are married couples living together, 13.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.20% are non-families. 22.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.30% under the age of 18, 15.80% from 18 to 24, 30.10% from 25 to 44, 16.00% from 45 to 64, and 9.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 106.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,177, and the median income for a family is $35,240. Males have a median income of $25,063 versus $20,748 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,611. 15.00% of the population and 12.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.30% of those under the age of 18 and 13.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
