Christopher Awdry is the son of the Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry.

Christopher was born in Devizes, Wiltshire in 1940. In 1942, his father created the character Thomas the Tank Engine to entertain him during a bout of measles. Later, Christopher himself wrote more railway stories to entertain his own son, Richard. Between 1983 and 1996 he added 14 new Railway Series books to the 26 published by his father.
