The film was adapted from the novel and from a play by Sidney Howard. Howard adapted it for the screen. It was directed by William Wyler.

The film stars Walter Huston, Ruth Chatterton, Paul Lukas, Mary Astor, David Niven and Maria Ouspenskaya.

The movie was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and has been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
