Food stylist

A food stylist is someone who makes food look attractive in photographs. The aim is to make the food look fresh and delicious.

As well as choosing and arranging the food, a number of special effects techniques are often used. These include:

  • using tobacco smoke to look like steam
  • spraying the food with hairspray to hold it in place
  • using mashed potato to look like ice cream
  • painting cooked meat to make it look better

For these and other reasons, food used in photographic shoots is generally thrown away after use.

Some food stylists state that they do not use these tricks.
