George Shannon

George Shannon joined the Corps of Discovery. He was the youngest member of the expedition. During the trip, he got lost two times. THe first time, he was separated when he was sent to retrieve two pack horses during a stop. He got lost on August 26, 1804. He had been ahead ever since he joined. John Colter, a member of the expedition, was sent to rescue him. He had been missing for sixteen days. At first, he thought he was behind the boats, so he sped up thinking he could catch up with the expedition. He went all the way upstream. Then, he was really hungry, so he went downstream to look for a trading party he could stay with. The expedition found him and learned that he had been without food for twelve days except for grapes and one rabbit which he killed by shooting with a hard stick instead of a musket ball. The second time he got lost was on August 6, 1805. He was dispatched up a rapid fork the party had named Wisdom----the middle fork was called Jefferson and the placid fork was called Philanthropy. He joined the party three days later after going back to the forks and pursuing them.
