Overview

The second election of the year, and the third in 18 months results in an inconclusive result. Fine Gael record their biggest election victory ever. They form a coalition government with the Labour Party. Garret FitzGerald becomes Taoiseach for the second time.

• May 13, 1983: Following the death of Clem Coughlan , his relative, Cathal Coughlan retains the seat for Fianna Fáil in Donegal South West.
• November 23, 1983: Following the death of George Colley, Thomas Leonard retains the seat for Fianna Fáil in Dublin Central.
• June 14, 1984: Following the death of Ber Cowen, his son, Brian Cowen retains the seat for Fianna Fáil in Laois-Offaly.
