Islam in Brazil

According to the 2000 census, there were 27,239 Muslims in Brazil. Most of them live in the states of São Paulo and Paraná. A very large percentage of them are Lebanese who left their country during Lebanese Civil War.

Newspaper estimatives for Muslims in Brazil range from 56,000 Muslims to around 70,000. Muslim authorities, however, believe that there are 1.5 million Muslims in Brazil, but this is extremely unlikely.
