John Augustus Stone

John Agustus Stone American dramatist and playwright, born in Concord, Massachusetts in 1801; died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1 June, 1834.

For actor Edwin Forrest he wrote "Metamora, Last of the Wampanoags!", a play regarding the life of King Philip.

He also wrote The Ancient Briton, Fauntleroy, La Roque, The Demoniac, and Tancred.

He was drowned in a fit of temporary insanity in the Schuylkill, at Philadelphia, and his monument there bears the inscription: "Erected to the memory of the author of 'Metamora' by his friend, Edwin Forrest". Some sources cite Forrest's success with Stone's plays and his paltry remuniration as causing his suicide.
