Lansing-Ishii Agreement

The Lansing-Ishii Agreement of 1917 between the United States and Japan established an Open Door policy in China, while acknowledging that Japan had special interests in China. The agreement, because of its vagueness and the resulting different interpretations, was abrogated in 1923.
