Lord Justice General

The Lord Justice General of Scotland is head of the High Court of Justiciary, Lord President of the Court of Session and head of the judiciary in Scotland. The office is derived from the justiciars who were appointed from the twelfth century, and the current title dates from the late fifteenth century. The office remained a virtual sinecure until 1836 when it was combined with that of Lord President of the Court of Session. It was first listed as a Great Officer of State in 1911.

His deputy is the Lord Justice Clerk.
