Malvaceae is a family of flowering plants that includes the mallows, cotton plants, okra, hibiscus, and hollyhocks. Recent genetic studies by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group have greatly expanded the family to about 240-250 genera, including the families Bombacaceae, Sterculiaceae and Tiliaceae previously treated as distinct, including well-known genera such as lindens, kapok, baobabs, and balsa. Traditionally the family consisted of about 1,500 species in 75 genera.
