Máximo Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear Pacheco (Buenos Aires 4 October 1868 – 23 March 1942 in Don Torcuato), better known as Marcelo T. de Alvear was an Argentina politician that was President of Argentina from 12 October 1922 to 12 October 1928. He was the leader of the anti-personalistic faction of the UCR (Unión Cívica Radical), opposed to Hipólito Yrigoyen. In contrast to Yrigoyen's popular style, Alvear belonged to the self-appointed "aristocracy" of Buenos Aires and never tried to hide that. He married opera singer Regina Pacini.

During his term, the economy of Argentina reached its best performance ever.

After the coup against Yrigoyen, Alvear gained control of the party and led the unsuccessful opposition to the conservative governments that followed, including the failed revolution of 1932. As a result, he was arrested and deported to Europe. In 1937, he ran for president once again, but was victim of the so called "Patriotic Fraud."
