Michael Allenby, 3rd Viscount Allenby

Michael Jaffray Hynman Allenby, 3rd Viscount Allenby (born 20 April 1931) is a British politician and hereditary peer, descended from Edmund Allenby, 1st Viscount Allenby (a famous commander during the Boer Wars and World War I).

Allenby was educated at Eton and at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in the Royal Hussars (formerly the 11th Hussars), which was stationed in Malaya between 1953 and 1956. He then served as aide-de-camp to the Governor of Cyprus (19571958), Brigade-Major of the 51st Brigade in Hong Kong (19671969) and as commander of the Territorial Army Royal Yeomanry (19741977).

After inheriting the title Viscount Allenby, of Megiddo and of Felixstowe, Co. Suffolk, Lord Allenby served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords from 1993 to 1999, and was elected in the latter year to remain in the House of Lords (due to the House of Lords Act 1999).
