Moroni (Mormonism)

For other people and things with the same name, see Moroni

Adherents of Latter-day Saint theology believe that Moroni (BoM Arabic موروني Mūrūnī) is a prophet who lived in North America in the late 4th century.

Not to be cofused with Captain Moroni, a figure who lived much earlier as recorded in the Book of Mormon.

Adherents believe that:

  • Moroni's father, Mormon (also a prophet), compiled and abridged the plates from the many records of their people over the centuries
  • Moroni engraved:
  • Moroni first appeared as a resurrected being (or angel) to Joseph Smith, Jr. in 1823.
  • Moroni delivered gold plates to Joseph in 1827. The plates are the record of Moroni's people, ancient Americans known as Nephites and Lamanites
  • Joseph translated one-third of the plates into a book called the Book of Mormon after which Joseph gave the plates back to Moroni.
