Municipal police are the providers of general police services to cities and towns and other urban or populated areas. They vary from place to place in the duties they perform. Some are rather large services and provide all police functions while smaller services provide only uniformed patrol and response services. Their jurisdictions also vary from only the municipalities that they serve to state or provincial boundaries. They may be armed and some may not exist in places served by state police or national police forces. There is a great diversity in training and capabilities between these forces. The Metropolitan Police are the municipal police for large metropolitan areas. Italy limits the size of municipal police forces to 2,000 people.
