Historical + Refit Summary and Highlights
These two powerful Battleships were basically improved versions of the Wyoming Class. The differences being that they had 14" Guns in 5 twin turrets rather then 12" guns in six twin turrets. During her Career,
1916-1917- Both ships served in 6th Battle Squadron of the Anglo-US Grand Fleet
During this time, the USS Texas became the first US Battleship to be fitted with a flying-off platform for Aircraft.
12 Nov 1918 Both Ships present for the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet at Firth of Forth in Scapa Flow
Mid 1920s- Both ships went through a refit which included the installation of New Boilers, the removal of one stack, the installation of 3in Anti Aircraft guns, the replacing of thier Cage Masts with Tripod Masts, and the installation of catapults and facilities for three Aircraft
20 May 1937-USS New York present at the Coronation of King George VI
1940s (Word War 2) Both ships saw heavy action. Both Served with the Atlantic Fleet, thier duties included Escort duty for convoys, fire support for the landings in Casablanca. The Texas then went on to provide fire support for the landings in Normandy and Southern France. They were then transfered to the Pacific Fleet to provide Fire Support for the landings on Okinawa and Iwo Jima, where the New York was hit by a Kamikaze attack, and was expended as a Target for the Atomic tests. Texas was given to the Loan Star State to be imortalized as a memorial where she remains today in San Jacento State Park, Near Houston. New York recieved three Battle Stars, while Texas recieved 5 and the Navy Occupation Service Medal.
