Plattdüütsch is a name for the regional language varieties:
East of the Elbe, the English name is Low Saxon. West of the Elbe it is East Low German. The official language code is, according to ISO 693-2 , nds. Since 1998, Plattdüütsch has been recognized by the European bureau for minority languages.
These Germanic language varieties are spoken mainly in northern Germany, southern Denmark and eastern Netherlands.
