Elisabeth, Princess of Belgium

Her Royal Highness Princess Elisabeth (Elisabeth Thérèse Marie Hélène Wettin) is the eldest daughter of Prince Philippe of Belgium, Duke of Brabant, the heir apparent to the throne of Belgium, and his wife Princess Mathilde of Belgium.

She was born October 25, 2001, in Anderlecht, near Brussels. Ten years before, a new act of succession was put into effect which created full cognatic primogeniture. It is therefore likely that she will one day become Queen Elisabeth I of the Belgians.

She was named Elisabeth after her great-great-grandmother, the popular Queen Elisabeth. Her godparents are Prince Amedeo of Belgium , her cousin, and Countess Hélène d'Udekem d'Acoz, her aunt.

The eldest son of the heir apparent was traditionally titled 'Count of Hainault'. It was therefore expected that a new royal decree would be issued, granting the title of Countess of Hainault to Princess Elisabeth. A royal decree was indeed issued, but, despite all predictions, it didn't grant her the title but abolished the title, because it was not linguistically neutral.

She has one younger brother: Prince Gabriel.
