Royal African Company

Originally "The Company of Royal Adventurers Trading to Africa", granted by Parliament in 1662, in 1672 the name was changed to Royal African Company, holding the exclusive government charter for slave trading until 1698 when Parliament overturned the monopoly.

The company was headed by James II of England. One notable member was Bristolian Edward Colston.
