Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat

In Chinese mythology, Sagwa is the ancestor of all Siamese cats.

Sagwa is a literary cat character introduced to the United States by way of a children's book Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat by author Amy Tan. Sagwa's popularity with children prompted an educational cartoon series of the same name on PBS. In the series, which takes place circa 1900, Sagwa has fun but learns valuable life lessons.

Main characters include:

  • Sagwa
  • Dongwa, Sagwa's older brother
  • Sheegwa, Sagwa's younger sister
  • Sagwa's (cat) parents
  • Sagwa's owners, a "foolish magistrate" and his wife
  • Fufu, Sagwa's bat friend
