San Juan National Historic Site in San Juan, Puerto Rico includes colonial-era forts, bastions, powder houses, and three fourths of the old city wall. It is part of the National Park Service. This National Historic Site also holds the distinction of being a World Heritage Site.

Status

The site gained U.S. protected status on February 14, 1949 by a decree which noted the need to protect the fortifications as monuments as well as preserve their historical and architectural value.

On December 6, 1983 the park was added to the list of World Heritage Sites, a status shared with the Great Wall of China and the pyramids in Egypt. Only 12 U.S. national parks are considered World Heritage Sites.

Hours of operation

The site is open to visitors year-round. June - November: 9:00am - 5:00pm December - May: 9:00am - 6:00pm

There is a nominal fee for entering the forts at the site ranging from US$3 for adult access to one fort for 1-day to US$5 for adult access to all forts for up to 7-days.
