Suwa, Nagano


Suwa (諏訪市; -shi) is a city located in Nagano, Japan.

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 53,600 and the density of 491.47 persons per km². The total area is 109.06 km².

The city was founded on August 10, 1941. It is located on the shores of Lake Suwa.

The famous is famous for its ryokans (onsen hotels) and its annual fireworks display held in August. The display takes place on the shores of the lake and many tens of thousands spectators enjoy the show from the shores. Trains are the recommended way to get to Suwa on that day.

Every seven years (in the year of the Lion and the Monkey) onbashira a shintoistic ritual is held, where some men from the city ride down a hill on a big trunk.
