Tyrone Willingham is the head football coach at the University of Washington. He was previously the head coach at Stanford University and the University of Notre Dame. He is notable as one of only a few African American head coaches in major college football.
His career record at Notre Dame was 21-15; the team went 6-5 in the 2004 regular season, Willingham's last season there. On November 30, 2004, Notre Dame announced he would not be retained for the 2005 season. Willingham was the first Notre Dame coach in over 70 years to be fired with time remaining on his original contract (he had three years left on a six-year contract). On December 13, 2004, Willingham was hired as the new head coach at Washington.
