The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases is based at Fort Detrick, Frederick, Maryland. Its acronym is often pronounced "You Sam Rid."

USAMRIID is the only United States Department of Defense laboratory equipped to study highly hazardous viruses at Biosafety Level 4.

USAMRIID was the origin of the anthrax strain determined through genetic analysis to be the material used in the 2001 anthrax attacks shortly after the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attack. The organization's role in Ebola-Reston outbreak of 1989 was the focus of Richard Preston's bestselling 1994 book The Hot Zone (ISBN 0385479565).

Steven Hatfill, designated a person of interest in the 2001 anthrax attacks, once worked at USAMRIID.
