U.S. presidential election, 2004, in New York
In 2004, New York continued its trend of voting for the Democratic presidential candidate. Senator Kerry defeated Predisent Bush by a margin of nearly twenty percent (Republicans last carried New York in the election of 1984).
A large part of Senator Kerry's victory was that he recieved 1,823,758 votes in New York City compared to President Bush's 562,339. If the the rest of the state was independent from the city, Senator Kerry would have won by only a slight margin (2,490,522 to 2,400,228).
