Unit 100


Unit 100 was a secret Imperial Japanese Army facility that focused on the development of chemical weapons during World War II. It was operated by the Japanese Military Police called Kempeitai. It was located in Shenyang (瀋陽) China and was disguised as an epidemic prevention and water supply unit.

Mission

Unit 100 conducted research about bacteria in and from animals. As most armies were still heavily dependent on horses, the IJA was looking for ways to kill them and therefore to weaken military power. The second purpose was to use animals as carrier of diseases. Experiments were also conducted with living human beingings, but little record or proof of human experimentation has been found. (Unit 731 was created to develop biological weapons against humans.)

Biological Warfare Agents

The following potential agents were tested:

  • Glanders Mr. Kuwabara gave testimony after WW2 that Unit 100 released horses infected with Glanders.
  • Anthrax
